What is covered under attendant care?

Attendant care is a no-fault personal injury protection benefit that covers assisting the car accident victim with their activities of daily living if they cannot do so independently. Keep in mind that three attendant care riders not only refer to you as the policyholder but may also refer to a person injured by you as a driver.

The activities that are covered under attendant here include administering the medication, bathing the person, dressing them, and even helping them with their toilet needs. Some people would need 24-hour services for them to live comfortably after a car accident.

Whether you get a 24-hour service or not as long as the services and activities that help you survive and sustain your living daily, you are covered by the attendant care services.

What activities are included in the attendant care rider?

The following activities are included in the attendant care rider:

  • monitoring and supervision for safety reasons; 
  • grooming; 
  • walking;
  • moving about inside and outside the home; 
  • driving to medical appointments;
  • carrying and lifting things; 
  • wound aid; and
  • getting in and out of bed.

Who can provide attendant care services that are covered by insurance?

Attendant care services can be provided by the following person head it would still be covered by your insurance:

  • A certified or registered nurse;
  • A home health aide from a commercial agency ;
  • A family member; or
  • A legal guardian of the car accident victim.

As long as the attended care provider serves any of the ones that are allowed then they may serve as attendant care provider of the individual.

Where would the services be provided?

The attendant care provider is required to provide services either at the car accident victim’s home or in a residential facility of assisted living. This is to ensure that you will get the best kind of attendant care if it is necessary.

Who ultimately pays for the attendant care?

Generally, if you have the attendant care writer it will be your own insurance company that would be paying for the attendant care services that you avail. On the other hand, it can also be the insurer of your spouse or a family member for an intruder that is assigned by the Michigan Assigned Claims Plan.
