Types of Student Visas
There are three types of student visas available to international students who want to study in the United States:
- F-1 Visa: This is for students who want to study at an accredited U.S. college or university or to study English at a university or intensive English language institute. F-1 students can remain in the U.S. for the duration of their academic program, plus 60 days.
- J-1 Visa: This visa is for students who want to participate in an exchange program. The J-1 visa is for students who need to obtain practical training to complete their academic program. Beneficiaries may be au pairs, in a summer work travel program, camp counselors, and more.
- M-1 Visa: This visa is for students who want to study at a vocational or other recognized nonacademic institution, other than a language training program. M-1 students must maintain the minimum course load for full-time student status. They can remain in the U.S. for one year. After completing their studies, M-1 students can remain in the U.S. for an additional 30 days to prepare for departure.
