In the previous articles of this series, we discussed civil infractions and traffic tickets in Michigan. As we have said, it is about civil liability and people would only need to pay a fine for a civil infraction.
However, what happens when you already have a sanction entered against you? When you have a sanction that is entered against you and you decide not to pay the fine and the costs that are associated with it, you have to face the following:
- License suspension. Your driver’s license may be suspended by the Court for failure to pay the fine and costs assessed by the Court.
- Civil contempt. You may also be held in civil contempt burden.
- Jail Time. The court may also decide that you be committed to jail until fines and costs are paid at the rate of $10.00 per day
- Extrajudicial proceedings. If you still do not pay the penalties, you have to pay a fine and costs might be collected through garnishment, execution, and levy.
In case you are thinking about it, you should keep in mind that not paying your fines is a kind of disrespect to the State and the Court. You will have to deal with the consequences if you continue with the disrespect.
